Role of 3D Technology in a future - Meta World
February 15, 2022
It’s quite fascinating to see, how most of the cutting edge technologies of today, all had their inception couple to several decades back. Another striking resemblance to them is that, most of them were part of Aerospace, Military & Defense projects and were later put to commercial use.
From the world changing Internet and Centimetre accurate GPS navigation systems, most of them had their origin in the defense and space sector.
It’s interesting to note that computer graphics also had a similar origin dating back to the 70’s in the Aerospace sector towards modelling and designing of Aircraft.
Creativity has it’s own ripple effects across industries and sectors, which is how our kind has evolved. The innovation which was intended and used in the Aerospace Industry got widespread adoption in Gaming, Films & Product Design.
The primary difference between a flat image and a 3D image format is it’s geometric accuracy, which makes it usable in various different categories and sectors. This gives the users and viewers a more realistic and holistic view of the objects digitally on the screen. The potential of 3D objects to recreate real life objects, tools and imaginary concepts to dimension accurate visual formats digitally, makes it more usable across industries and brings the virtual world to reality.
If not for the progress and advancement in the 3D computer graphics and 3D modelling, the modern 3D printers may not have seen the light of day.
As much as they emit accuracy and immersive reality digitally, the development and modelling of these 3D elements are quite tasking and requires unique expertise in terms of model development and rendering.
3D models play a major role, probably the most pivotal role in the Virtual Reality technology. Virtual Reality is all about bringing immersive experience of a physical or the simulated world. Each and every object and element in a VR content is made using 3D models or simulated based on 3D graphical elements.
Given the pace at which the Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality technologies are progressing towards a “Meta World”, 3D models and their underlying technology play a major role in terms of the Meta-verse’s progress and sustenance.
The amount of time taken towards designing and developing a 3D model or an object from scratch is quite laborious and intricate right now. If we need instant and automated virtual content, then the 3D graphics has to grow towards being able to inculcate automation in it’s development process. To the best of our research, we do not yet have any system or technology in place or under development towards achieving this.
Likely causes are that, we need more 3D content developed already and available across in a library. Most of the development teams and developers working in this technology are all working in silos respective to their own organizations. This is not bizarre or something new. Any company working with new technology would like to commercialize it to the best of their abilities and make it open once it’s been milked enough. This is not a bad practice in business and tech, but will hamper down the evolution of technology and will create monopolies and duopolies.
That’s not what the Metaverse aims or intends to be. We can’t be again at the mercy of few big tech-wigs and cry for mercy after the technology has taken it’s dominance. You can’t democratize a technology, just by having couple of players playing a major role.
We have been akin to this practice as well and we own all our 3D models within the confines of our own organization. But, we are ready to take on an open ecosystem and have our 3D models and the ones we create into a common repository, if and when we get support, and once our fellow entrepreneurs in our industry are ready to follow suit. This will create a common repository of 3D models, which can be used across companies operating in the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality domain. If we have more small organizations and startups operating this way, this reduces the time taken to develop and create new solutions across sectors and also fuels the growth of the technology and industry. This is just like having a common fuel station for all the automobiles.
If all the startups, individual developers and people working in this domain come together towards creating a common repository, then that will become the loudest crescendo reaching the big techs and they will also have to follow suit.
